Internet Explorer Tip – Opening Multiple Start Pages at Launch

Most people have a standard start page, commonly referred to as a Home Page, that loads each time they open Internet Explorer. If you regularly open additional pages in other tabs soon after starting IE you may want to set these additional pages to open automatically. For example you may have Google, MSN, Yahoo or AOL as your start page. Shortly after launching you may open Yahoo Finance and the New York Times and CNN in additional tabs. This can take a bit of time to do.

Opening Multiple Pages at Launch

To simplify this process you can configure Internet Explorer to open all these pages in their own individual tabs each time you launch IE. Here’s how:

First, open the web page that you want to set as an additional home page
Click on the drop down arrow next to the Home button (it looks like a small house) in the Internet Explorer Command barat the right end of the screen (see below).

Select “Add or Change Home Page” from the Home Page Menu(see below).

The “Add or Change Home Page” dialog box will appear as shown below.

Select (click the radio button) “Add this web page to your home page tabs.”
Click the “yes” button to save your selection.

To Remove a Home Page selection follow steps 1-3 and click on “Remove” and then select the page you want to remove from opening each time you launch Internet Explorer from the list that appears.

Note: Opening multiple home pages each time you launch Internet Explorer will also increase the amount of time it takes Internet Explorer to load completely.

Internet Explorer Tip – Setting Your Home Page

The first web page that is displayed when you open Internet Explorer can be easily changed to a web page of your choice. This page is commonly referred to as the Home Page and can also be set to not display any default page, leaving the Home Page blank. Here are the steps for setting your home page in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer and go to the web page that you want to use for your Home Page.

2. Click on the drop down arrow next to the Tools button (it looks like a gear) in the Internet Explorer Command bar on the right side of the screen (shown below).

3. After clicking on the Tools button go to the bottom of the list that appears and click on “Internet Options.”

An Internet Options dialog box will now appear (see below). Directly below the row of tabs in the dialog box will be an area labeled “Home Page” and the address for your current home page will show in that box.

4. Click on the button labeled “Use Current” and the web address (URL) for your new home page will now appear in the box.

5. Go to the bottom of the Internet Options dialog box and click on Apply and then on OK.

Internet Explorer – How to Email a Web Page

So you are viewing a web page within Internet Explorer 7 and want to share it with some else via email. There are a couple different solutions to this available within Internet Explorer 7 – copying an image of the page into the body of the email, or copying the web link into the body of the email. Both are relatively straightforward.

Internet Explorer – Send A Page Option

Internet Explorer actually has “Send a Page” function built right in that will allow you to email the web page just as it looks in your browser. To use this Internet Explorer function go to the web page you want to email, then click on File in the Menu Bar at the top of the Internet Explorer screen, then click on “Send” from the drop down list, and then select “Page by Email” or “Link by Email” from the new list that appears.

Internet Explorer will now open up your default email client such as Outlook or Outlook Express and copy the HTML code or the Link for the web page into the email body. Address and send your email and you are all set.

There are a couple caveats with this functionality. First, if you use an email client that does not utilizes HTML encoding (such as text-based email) this function will not work. In addition, this function may not work with all email clients. Below is a screenshot of how to access the Send function.

Copying Text from A Web Page

Question: How do I copy text from a Web Page?

I periodically copy text from a web page into a document or into an email and many times the formatting of the document I was working on becomes all messed up. Is there a way around this?

Answer:Copying Text

Your problem is caused by unseen formatting instructions that are embedded within the text in the web page. Once you copy the HTML web text (along with its unseen formatting codes) into your existing document a clash of formatting instructions occurs. The easiest way to prevent this is to copy the text from the web page into an ASCII text editor first, and then copy the text from the text editor into your document.

ASCII text editors strip out almost all formatting from a document and only allow standard ASCII characters – letters, numbers, punctuation marks and a specific set of symbols. To make this easier Windows actually contains a text editor named Notepad that works well for this de-formatting function.

You can access Notepad within Windows XP by clicking on Start –> All Programs–> Accessories –> Notepad. You can also bring up Notepad by clicking on Start –> Run — > and entering “Notepad” into the entry box and then clicking “OK”. There are plenty of other ASCII text editors out there if you want one with more bells and whistles than Notepad.
